Burkina Faso is one of the “poorest” countries in the world not because it doesn’t have any potential, but because its “natural resources” are not used in a sustainable way.  Burkina Faso has many different cultures with their different way of life which constitute its richness. That richness if opened up to the world is not only a way to help the people of Burkina Faso to obtain and enjoy better living standards but also a way to participate in the pursuit of a better management of the earth.  One way to reach that goal is by revalorizing the culture through ecovillages, teaching the native languages, band introducing to the world the rich culture of Burkina Faso through cross cultural reciprocity and eco tourism program.

Work

Language center: Reciproka language center offers classes in the main native languages of West Africa and Burkina Faso. Dioula/Bambara, Moore, Fulfulde, Gourmatchema.

Cultural Seminars: Readers about West Africa. Workshops and lectures about West Africa. Guest speakers -- African students and previous participants speak to participants. Also participants may get a chance to showcase their own cultures.

Cultural Immersion:The cultural immersion program builds on the Cultural Seminar program. Participants travel to Africa and experience both cities and eco-villages.  They are invited to participate fully in African community life. The cultural immersion program and the eco-village program are the driving forces for the other Reciproka programs.  It is highly recommended that those who participate in the other programs also participate in Cultural Immersion. (Americans get to explain what it means to them to be American, etc…)

Projects

Ecovillages:The ecovillage is built following traditional architectural guidelines, and expressly for cultural exchange. The ecovillage connects visitors with traditional West African culture and people, while it provides a central place for African people to showcase their culture without giving up the privacy of their ancestral villages. It shows the everyday life, the structures and dwellings, the clothing, food, language, celebrations, ceremonies, dances, and storytelling of its people. Each region selects community members who support the ecovillage by living a traditional lifestyle, welcome participants and including them in the daily activities of the village.

The ecovillage benefits African people as well as visitors. Besides providing a direct revenue stream from tourism, it also revalorizes traditional life and customs. It can serve as a regional hub for cultural preservation and education, not only for visitors but for African people who have become cut off from their cultural roots.
